Sometimes we wonder how a name came about. What does it mean? Why did the author choose that particular title?
How does the series title capture the meaning of the story as a whole?

Well, for me, this story began in a dream. So I thought it fitting to relate the title of this series to the story's origin, as it was simply... a dream.

What is REM?

A little background about sleep and dreams...
During the time we sleep, we normally pass through five phases.

Phase 1 is characterized as 'light sleep,' and as one drifts in and out of sleep in the beginning, a person can be easily awakened.

In Phase 2, eye movements stop and brain waves become slower with little bursts of rapid waves called 'sleep spindles.'

In Phase 3, extremely slow brain waves called 'delta waves' start to appear. At this time, they are still mixed with some rapid waves.

In Phase 4, the brain allows delta waves take over. Phases 3 & 4 are considered 'deep sleep' and waking someone up during these two stages is difficult.

Once we pass through the first four phases, we switch to REM sleep. REM stands for rapid eye movement, and this phase of sleep is by far the most interesting. Our breathing becomes rapid, irregular, shallow, and our eyes move quickly in various directions. By far the most fascinating, is the fact that our limbs... our muscles, become temporarily, completely paralyzed, and unresponsive. How bizarre is that?!? REM sleep usually lasts anywhere from 90-120 minutes at a clip. Once the REM phase ends, the cycle begins again with Phase 1. Not only does most of our dreaming occur during the REM phase of sleep, it is also this phase where the most memorable and vivid dreams are made.

There are also different types of sleep, such as one called, 'Lucid Dreams.' Let's save that for a blog chat...
